First United Methodist Church in Perry is excited to announce a series of sermons starting in September meant to bring everyone together.
The sermon series, which runs Sept. 15, 22, 29 and Oct. 6, will be led by the UMC director of the office of pastoral care and counseling and will include guest speaker Dr. Mary Fraser each Sunday morning. A potluck meal will be served after the Sept. 22 service, provided by church members, and anyone is invited to join for worship at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.
“We’re calling this ‘A Time for Us,’ ” explains co-pastor Paul Burrow. “It’s basically a time for us to talk about where we are and where God wants us to be — that sort of thing.
“It’s a time where we will take a look at where we’ve been, where we are, and this will occur during the morning worship for four Sundays in a row,” Burrow says. “Dr. Fraser is the conference counselor and advisor for all of the (United Methodist) churches in Iowa and, to be honest, to get her for four Sundays is a pretty neat thing, because she is a busy lady,” which is why now is the perfect timing for this sermon series, as Fraser is actually able to fit it into her schedule, he says.
This will be the first time Fraser will deliver a sermon at the Perry church location. Although Fraser has not divulged exactly what will her messages will cover, Burrow says it will be worth the wait.
“This is just something that my co-pastor Enna Antunez also wanted to happen. We’ve both wanted to have this chance to get everyone involved and that’s hard, so this was good opportunity,” Burrow adds. “It’s a time for everybody in the congregation, not just certain people, to really have a chance to talk together. We will be doing discussion during worship to get to know Dr. Fraser and to look ahead for what the future holds for Perry United Methodist.”
