Chris and Nicki Simonis’ southeast Johnston home was the young couple’s first home together.
“We moved in to the house in May of 2009, from separate apartments in West Des Moines,” Nicki says. “We were the first owners, so we got to custom select the carpet, certain wall color schemes, things like that. It was exciting.”
The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath home sits on about a half-acre of land, with some light woods behind the back yard. The small neighborhood is set back off of any main thoroughfares, making it quiet and kid-friendly, but it’s location also provides quick access to Lower Beaver and the interstate, a consideration which is important for Nicki, who works as a teacher in the Ankeny School District.
Since the couple moved into their home immediately after construction, it was already laid out pretty well to their liking. There have been a few minor changes in the years since, however.
“We finished the basement,” Nicki says, listing projects off. “(We) fenced in the backyard, did some landscaping and added some brighter paint colors.”
Now the couple feels like the home is almost totally how they’d like it.
“We might still add a workbench to the garage, but that’s about it now,” Nicki says.
The main level of the house starts in a foyer with a vaulted ceiling, which leads into the cozy living area with a fireplace and north- and south-facing windows. There’s also a large kitchen/dining area with an island and plenty of marble countertop space.
“I think I enjoy the kitchen the most,” Nicki says. “I really like the nice, wide-open floor plan.”
The main floor also houses the half bath and access to the two car garage. A small patio area sits off the kitchen, leading out into the fenced-in backyard.
The top floor is home to the master bed and bath, as well as two smaller guest rooms and a separate full bathroom. The home’s now-finished basement includes a computer room and storage, as well as a television and space to entertain.
