Headstone in Bishop Quarters Cemetery near Ballyvaughn, Ireland
April 2007

Patrick S. Broderick Jr., 76, entered eternal life Sept. 2, 2013.

Born Dec. 8, 1936, in Decorah, Iowa, to Grace Marie Jennisch and Patrick Broderick Sr., Pat moved to the east side of Des Moines at age 5. He was proud of his east-side heritage, his family, and his life-long friendships. He graduated from Dowling in 1954. On May 17, 1958, he married Janet Bormann of Emmetsburg. After 34 years with the U.S. Postal Service, Pat retired at 55 as Director of Finance. Following retirement, he worked as a contractor. He served in the U.S. Navy and was also a Navy Seabee.

Pat enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and boating, and playing cards and trading jokes and “true” stories. He was a member of the Capital City IA Moose Lodge 2589, National Association of Federal Employees, Naval Enlisted Reserve Association, Amvets Post 0002, and VFW Post 9127.

On his first trip to Ireland, the scenic country, colorful locals, and hearty Guinness won his heart, and he and Jan later rented cottages in 2003 and 2007 to host family and friends. Many happy summer vacations, kicking off on Father’s Day, were spent at Fillenwarth Resort in Okoboji.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years; daughters Anne Conner (Dan) and Cathy Medina (Rick); four grandchildren: Logan, Wade and Ellen Conner and Dylan Medina; sisters- and brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by his parents, sister Grace Ann, and grandson Addam Medina.

Visitation will be at Iles Funeral Homes ~ Grandview Park Chapel where the family will receive friends Thursday, September 5 from 4 p.m. until a 7 p.m. vigil service. Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church Friday, September 6 at 10:30 a.m., and burial is Monday, September 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

The family is grateful for the outpouring of support extended to them these last weeks.
