Leland Ronald Shell, age 75, passed away August 30, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born August 23, 1938 to Ed and Louise (Tonsfeldt) Shell, 1 of 11 children.Leland grew up west of Boone in the Pleasant Hill area and spent most of his life in Boone County. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone on October 28, 1951 and confirmed March 29, 1953. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1956.After Linotype School, he worked for the Villisca Review and Boone Blank Book Co. He served in the Iowa Air National Guard from 1961 to 1965. In 1966, he started work for Iowa Electric Light & Power (Alliant Energy), moving to the Madrid office in 1969, and retired in 1996.
Leland was always quick with a joke or subtle humorous line. His family was his priority and he spent time with them enjoying many activities such as camping, gardening, playing cards, traveling, baking, hunting mushrooms, and rockhounding.In recent years he found great enjoyment in auctions, antiquing and the many friends he shared this interest with. He was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid, and The Madrid Historical Society.
Leland is survived by his wife of 49 years, Alma (Calhoon) Shell; 3 daughters, Brenda of Ankeny, Darci Munford of Waukee, and Tracey of Des Moines; 3 granddaughters, Maggie Berg of Columbia , MO, Meridee Munford of Worcester, MA, and Andrea Munford of Waukee; a brother, Mahlon (Fern) of Mesa, AZ; sisters Verdine Bergling of Mesa, AZ , Iola Leland and Jane Bass of Boone, Mary Lou Sullivan of Dubuque, Fran (Bob) Grabbert of Omaha, NE, Joyce (Ken) Patten of St Paul, MN, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Louise Shell, a sister, Karen Cowen Roush and infant siblings John Robert and Emma Jean.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday September 3, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid burial will follow in the Mt Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick funeral home in Madrid.
