Lois Ann Skalla, age 81, of Scranton, Iowa, passed away at her home Friday, August 23, 2013.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Schott as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Monday where there will be Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by St. Lawrence Parish. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Lectors for the Mass will be Cara Gustafson and Lauren Skalla. Gift bearers will be Hilary, Abbey, and Megan Skalla. Eucharistic ministers will be Barbara Tomblinson, Michelle Gustafson, and Shirley Rupiper. Organist for the Mass will be Marcy Anderson and family soloist will be Emily Skalla. Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Aaron Skalla, Luke Skalla, Brandon Tomblinson, Dustin Tomblinson, Jared Gustafson, Jeffrey Skalla, Calvin Skalla, and Nathan Skalla. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery.

Born on April 29, 1932, at Auburn, Iowa, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Kohorst) Wernimont. She grew up in Auburn and Carroll and graduated from St. Angela’s Academy in 1949. Following high school, she worked for Carroll County State Bank. She was married to Richard Skalla on August 22, 1953, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church by Fr. Pacques. The couple made their home southeast of Scranton where they raised their family. Lois was active in the farming operation and she was active in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. Lois enjoyed playing in her bridge club, cooking and baking, being an astute investor, learning about business, following sports, attending family sporting events, and spending time with her family especially during the holidays. She was a member of the LeDene Club and the St. Paul’s Rosary Sodality. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend.

Lois is survived by two daughters: Barbara Tomblinson of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Michelle Gustafson and her husband Bryan of Omaha, Nebraska; four sons: Craig Skalla and his wife Kay of Scranton, Iowa, Kevin Skalla and his wife Nancy of Willmar, Minnesota, David Skalla and his wife Teresa of Jefferson, Iowa, and Brian Skalla of Chicago, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren: Luke and Aaron Skalla, Brandon and Dustin Tomblinson, Cara and Jared Gustafson, Lauren, Megan, Emily, and Nathan Skalla, and Hilary, Abbey, Jeffrey and Calvin Skalla; one great granddaughter Madelyn Skalla; three step grandchildren: Alex, Elizabeth, and Nicole Marshall; two sisters: Shirley Rupiper of Okoboji, Iowa and Marilyn Stahl and her husband Joe of Laguna Hills, California; four brothers: Victor Wernimont and his wife Florence of Roselle, Iowa, Franklin Wernimont of Phoenix, Arizona, Dennis Wernimont and his wife Lois of Kansas City, Missouri, and Floyd Wernimont of Ft. Collins, Colorado; sisters-in-law: Rosella Schelle of Carroll, Laura Wernimont of Carroll, Mildred Skalla of Scranton, Donna Wernimont of Texas, Susan Wernimont of Phoenix, Arizona, Joan Wernimont of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1998, a daughter-in-law Patricia Skalla, two brothers: Clarence and Virgil Wernimont, a brother Joseph in infancy.
