Clive, Iowa August 21, 2013— Around the country and around the world, in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and senior residences, elders are bonding with babies and toddlers through music-making, created by the international award-winning early childhood music program MUSIC TOGETHER®
In Clive, Iowa, an “Intergenerational” class will be held each week at Walnut Ridge Senior Community where people as old as 100 join Music Together classes with young children on-site at their senior residence.
Denise Schmitz, Director of Songs and Signs, LLC, explains, “This will be a highlight of the week for many senior residents. Some of them simply come to life when they are watching the class. Others love tapping their feet and shaking the instruments along with the kids. And the children love it to. There is an instant connection. Many of these seniors have grandchildren living far away and cannot see them as often as they would like. We are happy to give them a chance to participate in a class filled with young children and their parents playing and singing. Music Together directors like me are very happy to be doing this in Clive, Iowa and around the world.”
Bonding children and their grown-ups through music and helping all people discover the joy and educational value of early music experiences are among the key missions of Music Together. So, it is a natural fit that the company created a special program where these very classes are held at a senior citizen facility to be shared with much older generations.
Denise Schmitz adds, “Strangers or not, within minutes everyone is part of our music-making family at these classes. The idea that music bonds people is never more obvious and meaningful than during the time we spend at Walnut Ridge Senior Community.”
Music Together classes offer a delightful, joyous approach to music-making with your child. Songs and Signs, LLC, out of West Des Moines, Iowa, has been offering Music Together classes for over ten years. The Music Together program gives families an opportunity to sing, dance and play rhythm instruments together in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. It nourishes parents’ efforts to create a rich musical environment at home, regardless of their musical abilities.
Classes are specifically designed to accommodate the unique learning styles of the very young while being highly engaging to their adult companions. Activities are designed so that ALL ages can participate happily at their own level, no matter their aptitude or skill.
