Noel Lee Johnson, 67, of Des Moines passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday August 22, 2013 after a courageous seven year battle with cancer.
Noel was born in Des Moines to Frank W. and M. Maxine Johnson. He was a proud graduate of Des Moines Tech High School Class of 64′ and Iowa State University Class of 70′.While attending ISU in the spring of 1966 Noel was introduced to Julie A. Lydon and they were married that summer on August 14. They were blessed with three children, Jeffrey(Mari)of Ames, Craig(Sarah) of Des Moines, Melissa(Jon) of Runnells.
Noel’s degree in HRI Management from ISU lead him to a career incountry club management from 1970 to 1974 at Wakonda Club.In 1975 Noel moved his family to Ames where he was employed by Carriage House Meat & Provision Co. in HRI Sales and then as Plant Manager.
In 1988 Noel moved his family to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Carfrae Meats. In 1991 Noel moved his family back to Des Moines where he worked for Ames Processed Foods, Iowa Quality Meats, and Origin New Zealand. In 2001 while attending bible study Noel approached his Pastor Scott Brady about starting a new church. This was the beginning of NewLife Church in Pleasant Hill, Iowa where Noel was an Elder and worked as Small Group Coordinator and Church Administrator.
Noel was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his ten grandchildren: Holly, Jaclyn, Ethan, Hannah, Noah, Jonah, Micah, Kaleb, Malia and Anya. He especially enjoyed supporting them in their school, sports, musical and church activities. Noel loved baseball, Cyclone athletics, vacationing with family in the Black Hills of S.D., and being a chaperon on United Nations trips for Des Moines area high school students.
Noel served the community as Past-President of the Ames Noon Kiwanis Club, President of the Ames High Quarterback Club and six years on the Ames School Board.
Noel lived a life of spirit and devotion to his Lord always looking to help improve the lives of others. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
Visitation will be held at NewLife Church at 6036 N.E. 12th Ave, Pleasant Hill, Iowa on Sunday August 25 from 4 p.m – 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at NewLife Church on Monday August 26 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Powers-Warren Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to NewLife Church Building Fund.
