Tackle the fall season at the library

Posted August 21, 2013 in Altoona, Community Featured

School is back in session, and everyone is probably getting used to the routine once more. The Altoona Public Library is offering some change-of-pace activities to help you ease into the school year.

Children’s story times
Children’s story times resume in September. Please refer to our website or calendar (available at the circulation desk) for times and dates.

Teen activities

Model train layouts will be displayed at the library Sept. 7 - 8.

Model train layouts will be displayed at the library Sept. 7 – 8.

Come to Dinner and a Movie for teens on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. The movie this month will be “Scary Movie 5” (PG-13). Kids younger than 13 will require a signed, parental permission form.  Pizza is on the menu.

Teens have until Aug. 31 to complete and turn in their summer reading prize passes. The grand prize drawing will be on Sept. 3.

Adult summer reading program
The adult summer reading program (Groundbreaking Reads) is wrapping up at the end of August.  Bring your lunch on Aug. 30 as you chat about books from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and enjoy dessert provided by the library.

All aboard
For those who enjoy model railroads, the library will be the center of the universe during the weekend of Sept. 7 and 8. Two area model railroad clubs will have train layouts running at the library during our regular hours.

The DesmoinNTRAK  Modular Model Railroad Club represents people from all over the central Iowa community. The group has had an active membership for more than 30 years.

Iowa Central Modular Railroad Club, based in Marshalltown, has been around many years, as well.

Author to visit APL
A visit from author Frederick Blanch is scheduled for Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.  His latest book is “Last Words: Frederick’s Bionary,” which will be released that month.

Blanch’s book will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.

Homecoming float entry
Look for the library entry in this year’s S.E. Polk homecoming parade on Sept. 19. Who knows what surprise we will have in store for parade-goers? Come to the parade and find out.

Volunteer opportunities
The Altoona Public Library is looking for volunteers in grades six-12 for a variety of tasks, like participating in a teen advisory group and helping to keep the collection organized and clean.

We will be having a volunteer informational meeting at the library on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. Volunteer applications are available at the front desk. Please bring your completed application to the meeting. If you are unable to attend, but would still like to learn more about volunteering, please contact Amy or Jenny at 967-3881 or email us at webmaster@altoona.lib.ia.us.
