Danny and Linda Albaugh are no strangers to the volatile housing market. Their attempts at selling a large, four-level home to downsize took more than two years.
They have been trying to sell their current home in the hopes of retiring in Florida, but their patience wore out. No offer was ever made.
And so it goes. The Albaughs decided to retire right here in Altoona, in their beautiful 2004 custom-built home on 21st Street S.W.
“I love the entry way into this home,” says Linda. “The chandelier and recessed lighting that peaks out of the 12-foot-ceiling is just beautiful at night.”
There are many things they like about this home. Danny recalls the process of getting to choose all the fixtures, fans and counter tops. It took a long time, but it was fun, he states.
“We added the front porch and the covered back porch, which was well worth it,” Linda says. “We can grill in the back even when it’s raining.”
The finished basement was another selling point for the couple. It is spacious enough for their entire family — four children, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. This is where their family photo was professionally taken a few years back and where they all fit for Christmas.
The summer landscaping done around the home was completed by Danny right after they moved in.
“We put in all the shrubs, trees, flowers and approximately five tons of river rock in various flower gardens,” says Danny.
Theirs was the fifth house on the block to be built. There were no homes across the street, and their backyard, where apartments now stand, was once wetlands filled with frogs. At their first Thanksgiving, their grandchildren noticed 12 deer running across.
The couple is retired. They enjoy their Car Club friends, car shows and reminiscing about the many trophies Danny has collected in the garage. They are both excited for the fall football season. They even still chat about venturing to Florida. This time just for the winter.
