While locally grown food helps to reconnect fundamental basics of good food and community relationships, up-to-date technology is being put in place to facilitate these connections.

During its first couple of years, Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, North Iowa’s local food promotional organization, had a basic webpage sponsored on the Earth Day North Iowa  website. As Healthy Harvest’s programming developed, there was need for a more sophisticated webpage – one with a searchable database of local producers, capacity to list calendar of events and other resources. CL Tel, sponsor of the Earth Day North Iowa site, stepped up as the major sponsor of this project.

The  website – www.northiowafood.org – is now available to make finding local food easy and convenient. The website’s database lists nearly 50 local food producers, 17 North Iowa farmers markets, and more than 10 food businesses that have a practice of buying from local producers. There are also a number of resources for consumers and producers. A calendar of events features information on this fall’s new Fresh on the Farm local farm food events, and will be the location to check out for other local food related events.

“We are pleased to see all of this fresh activity in support of local food and especially glad to help Healthy Harvest of North Iowa provide dynamic, up to date information to North Iowans with their new website,” said CL Tel President Jan Lovell.  “Consumers are eager to buy locally to support the North Iowa economy and parents are wanting fresh, local food for their families. Providing that “fresh” information online through this website meets all of those needs and has a positive impact on our entire region.”

Healthy Harvest of North Iowa’s mission is to convene diverse partners committed to a sustainable regional food system through capacity building and local food promotional and educational activities. Priorities include Producer support, expanded market development, consumer education and marketing.
