Martha Mueller, 85, passed away on August 17, 2013 at the Kavanagh House of Des Moines.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 22, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel. A private interment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter following the service. The family will receive visitors at Westover Chapel on Wednesday, August 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Martha was born to Ernest and Grace Negley in Burlington, Iowa on July 2, 1928. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1946, and went on to attend Burlington Junior College. Martha received her B.A. in education from Drake University.

Martha met her devoted husband of sixty-one years, Jack Mueller, in Burlington, Iowa. Jack and Martha settled in Des Moines where they raised their family. Martha touched many lives as a teacher at Clive Elementary School in West Des Moines. She retired after many years of dedicated service to the students and families of Clive Elementary.

Martha had a passion for cooking and reading. She enjoyed singing with the Urbandale Senior Citizen Choir. She was a devout Iowa Hawkeye fan. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends.

Martha was a devoted wife, exceptional mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Martha will be remembered as a generous and caring woman who always put others first.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Dawn Goodrich of West Des Moines, Ned Mueller of LaSalle, Colorado, and Teri (Randy) Mohning of Altoona; brother-in-law, James (Laurel) Mueller of Minnesota; and six grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Williams, Josh Goodrich, Molly (Jeff) Ganow, Blake (Beth) Benton, Libby (Corey) Adkins, and McKenzie (Jesse) Smith. Martha was blessed with nine great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and grandson, Nathan Churchill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kavanagh House of Des Moines.
