Honda, Kawasaki, Harley and even a trike — there is no discrimination here when it comes to make and model. Members of the Word of Life Church Riders group want to do just that — ride. Once a month, they hop onto their various motorcycles and hit the old, dusty trail, enjoying a throttle-pumping, engine-roaring, wind-in-their-hair experience.
Senior Pastor Bruce Wangler began coordinating the motorcycle group just this summer. In his younger days he used to ride, but he sold his bike when he and his wife, Nicole, started a family. Now that their four kids are growing older, Nicole surprised Bruce on their anniversary with a shiny, new pair of wheels. Needless to say, the pastor is back to riding, but this time he is not alone.
“Generally, you like to ride with someone,” he expressed, excited about sharing his hobby. And thus, the WOL Riders were born. The group is made up of seven couples from the church congregation, all with a wide range of biking experience, Wangler said. They have already been on two outings. Their latest adventure was on Aug. 9.
Starting with shorter trips, the riders have been to both Osceola and Creston. They’ve gone out on a Saturday morning for brunch but mainly have planned evening rides after everyone has gotten off work, only to return home as the Iowa sun begins to set on the growing cornfields.
“We’re just strolling down the road, taking it easy and safe,” explained Wangler.
The pastor says he enjoys spending time outside of the church with this segment of his congregation.
“We can just get away, ride a bit and get to a place where we can sit and visit,” he said. “It’s a nice way to get to know each other a little better.”
For now the WOL riders will stick close to areas surrounding Winterset but are possibly looking to take longer trips as skill levels develop. They also may expand in membership to further share their love for the open road.
