Local Food Farm Tours Scheduled for September in North Iowa

Three on-farm events, free and open to the public, are scheduled to provide fun for the whole family this September.

Fresh on the Farm 2013 is a series of three on-farm events taking place across North Iowa. The series is organized by Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, in partnership with the local farmers, County Extension, and community sponsors. These events provide the public fun, interactive opportunities to get to know local food farms in North Iowa on their turf – at the farm! Come taste and support the wonderful flavor of fresh.

The dates and locations for Fresh on the Farm 2013 are:

Saturday, September 7, 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Mitchell & Floyd County

Host farms include: Steve & Beth Rachut at Steve’s Sweet Corn, Kelli & Matt Miller at Sugar Creek Farm, and Jay Jung at Big River Meat Company.

Sunday, September 15, 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. – Eagle Grove

Host sites include: Cheryl & Carl Johnson at C’s 270th St. Gardens, Don Garrett at Boone River Bison, and Rachel Cahalan at Boone River Grill.

Sunday, September 22, 12noon – 6 p.m. – Franklin County

Host farms include: Shannon Latham at Enchanted Acres, Karen & Matt Koenig at Koenig’s Acres, and Cathy & Dennis Carlson at Carlson Tree Farm.

At each event there will be opportunity to tour farms, sample food, and buy product. Be prepared to be awed! Start wherever you want, but be sure to visit all host sites.

Helping to sponsor these events are: Floyd, Franklin, Mitchell, and Wright County Extension Councils, Osage Chamber of Commerce, Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce, CUS Bank of Osage, and a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Rancher/Farmer grant.
