Increase in Number of Reported Petty Thefts and Thefts from Motor Vehicles

Posted August 14, 2013 in Community Web Exclusives, Johnston

Over the past couple of weeks the Police Department has experienced an increase in the number of reported complaints regarding petty thefts and thefts from motor vehicles.  Although the Johnston Police Department is working diligently to try and curtail this activity and apprehend the responsible offenders, we need the community’s help to ensure our efforts are successful.  The Police Department wants residents to be alert for any suspicious persons or behavior and for you to contact the Johnston Police Department if you observe anything out of the ordinary in your neighborhood.   The Police Department also recommends residents follow these simple guidelines to minimize your risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime.

  • KEEP YOUR OVERHEAD GARAGE DOORS CLOSED WHENEVER YOU ARE GOING TO BE OUT OF IMMEDIATE SIGHT OF YOUR GARAGE.
  • LOCK YOUR VEHICLE AND REMOVE ALL VALUABLE PROPERTY FROM IT WHENEVER YOUR VEHICLE IS GOING TO BE LEFT UNATTENDED FOR ANY PERIOD OF TIME.
  • KEEP YOUR PURSE OR WALLET WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES WHEN YOU ARE OUT AND AVOID LEAVING IT IN A CAR.
  • ONLY TAKE NECESSARY ITEMS OF FINANCIAL VALUE WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO OUT.  LEAVE ANY UNNECESSARY CASH, CREDIT CARDS AND IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS SECURED AT HOME INSTEAD OF ROUTINELY CARRYING THEM AROUND NEEDLESSLY IN YOUR WALLET OR PURSE.
