St. Peter Lutheran Church will hold a “Blessing of the Backpacks on Sunday, Aug. 18.

On Sunday, Aug. 18, during the 9 a.m. worship service at St. Peter Lutheran Church, children are invited to bring their backpacks for the annual “Blessing of the Backpacks” event to kick off the school year.

The event, where children are invited to bring their backpacks up for a blessing during the Children’s Message portion of the service, emphasizes the ties between faith and education for the children of the congregation.

A youth group kickoff event for all sixth-12th grade youth will also be held on Aug. 18 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the home of two congregation members. A grill-out is planned with hot dogs and burgers, and outdoor games will be played. Youth are also encouraged to bring their friends. For more information on the event, please call St. Peter Lutheran Church at 515-986-3077.

St. Peter Lutheran Church will host confirmation orientation for seventh and eighth grade children and their parents on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 11 a.m. The group will hand out calendars for the year, discuss service and fellowship nights and sign up for acolyte responsibilities. If you have questions or would like to register, please contact Sonja Gerstenberger at sonja.gerstenberger@gmail.com.

The church will also host Sunday school kick-off on Sunday, Sept. 8. Children should meet in the sanctuary at 9:15 a.m. for the first day of Sunday school, and parents are invited to attend. The new curriculum for the year will be announced.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, Crossroads Community Church will host a Ministry Fair, with all different ministries from within the church gathering to share their experiences and interact with each other. All are encouraged to attend the event, which will feature food and a chance for new members to meet the rest of the congregation.

“There will be tables for our mission groups, our women’s groups, our serving and food groups,” says Associate Pastor Gus Henrici. “It’s a relaxed way for people to interact and find volunteer opportunities with other ministries.”

Grimes United Methodist Church will host its Fall Kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 8. Sunday school will be held during both 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services, and a potluck with games for the children will be held after the second service. Youth groups and Bible classes will resume that Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m.
