As summer winds down, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center continues to plan community events, host visitors from all over the world and promote tourism in Madison County.
We’re busy planning our tourism booth at the Iowa State Fair and the Fourth Annual Madison County BBQ Shootout. If you’ve never ventured up to the courthouse square to enjoy this popular event, make sure this is the year you do it.
We are quickly closing in on our goal of 24 competition barbecue teams to compete for cash prizes and a trophy. Teams from all over the state — Norwalk, Ankeny, West Des Moines, Lakeside, Eldon, Whitten and Agency — are coming to downtown Winterset and bringing their own brand of barbecue sizzle with them.
The Madison County BBQ Shootout is a free community event that combines competition barbecue with entertainment and fun around our courthouse square. If you like barbecue, sign up to be a judge. If you like music, come out and hear the bands and performers on the stage, as well as Toaster, which performs on Saturday night. Speaking of Saturday night — it’s Bike Night. This has quickly become a very popular event for our community and a great event to cap off a Saturday of competitive barbecue.
A cornhole/bags tournament is planned, as well as frog races, inflatables, a kids carnival, watermelon- and hot dog-eating contests, food vendors, and new this year — a parade. The theme for the parade is “The Wild, Wild West,” so dust off your cowboy hats, your spurs, your leather chaps and vests or your sheriff’s badges and plan your entry. We’re looking for teams, kids, cars, tractors, horses (stick or otherwise), businesses, floats and clubs to join. Prizes will be awarded to the Best of Theme, Best Float and Best Child’s Entry Age 10-Younger. The parade will be Saturday, Aug. 17 at 10 a.m, with line-up at 9:15 am behind the former middle school.
It’s gonna be rootin’, tootin’ fun, so don’t miss it.
