Several hundred people are expected to attend an Aug. 22 celebration recognizing E.J. Giovannetti’s more than 40 years of public service in Urbandale and the Greater Des Moines community. Giovannetti was mayor of Urbandale for 20 years before spending 10 years as a member of the Polk County Board of Supervisors. He also has served on a host of local boards and commissions.
The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walker Johnston Park, 9000 Douglas Ave., and is open to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication program will begin at 6 p.m. in the park’s new facility, which will be named the Giovannetti Community Shelter.
“So many people have come forward and asked to be part of this event honoring E.J.,” said Mike Carver, who spearheaded organization of the event. “E.J. has had an enormous influence on the development of Urbandale over the years and, more recently, in the operation of Polk County. He has touched so many lives.”
