Bonnie Carson

Bonnie Carson, 97, passed away August 7 at Silvercrest at the Woodlands, Clive. Visitation will be at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, on Saturday, August 10, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 5720 Urbandale Ave., Des Moines. A private burial will be held on Monday.

Bonnie was born in Waseca, MN, the oldest daughter of Frank and Sophie Bell. She graduated from Waseca High School and attended business school in Minneapolis. She then moved to Des Moines and eventually went to work for the Utica Department Store downtown. It was there that she met Jack Carson, also a Utica employee. Jack and Bonnie married in 1939 and spent almost all of their lives in the Des Moines area. She spent 34 years with Freeman Decorating Co. as an accountant, retiring in 1984.

Bonnie is survived by her daughters, Jane Carson Boyd (John) of Aurora, CO, and Janet Carson Holms (Don) of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Bonnie is also survived by her sisters, Frankie Mae Stevenson of West Des Moines and Donna Lou Swenson of Mankato, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack and their son John.

Bonnie was a member of numerous organizations, including Urbandale Lioness, St. Andrew’s WOWS, Urbandale Senior Center and the Urbandale Golf & Country Club where she was a charter member and the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors. She also belonged to several bridge groups, the Friday Lunch Bunch and the Happy Hookers.

Bonnie was a beautiful woman, always positive, always on the go, always smiling, always gracious, always fun. Until the last few months of her rich life, it was hard to find her at home. Her daughters and grandchildren will miss her presence (she was at everything) and support. And her great-grandchildren, who called her Great Bonnie, will miss her tea parties and everything else she did with those children and for them.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church or Iowa Hospice in Johnston.
