Fr. Bob Hoefler, 66, died August 7, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 12. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with a Vigil at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 11. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville, Iowa.

Fr. Bob Hoefler was born on July 10, 1947, the first son of Arnold and Clara (Brekel) Hoefler of Granville, Iowa. He graduated from Spalding Catholic High School in 1965 and then went on to Loras College in Dubuque. After graduating from Loras in 1969, he went on to teach U.S. History and French and coach debate at Indianola Community High School for 12 years.

In 1981, he entered St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Maurice Dingman in 1985. For four years, he taught at St. Albert High School as he assisted at Council Bluffs parishes. From 1989 to 1992, he served as associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in West Des Moines, helping to lay the groundwork for the formation of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in West Des Moines.

After one year of teaching at Dowling Catholic High School, he served 10 years as pastor at St. Theresa Parish in Des Moines. Then he served as pastor for 7 years at St. Michael Parish in Harlan. He began as pastor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in 2010, where he served until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother Jim. He is survived by his sister-in-law Sharon of Jasper, Alabama, and cousins scattered throughout the United States.
