Tom Tomlinson, 71, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at his home in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines on Saturday, August 10 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery in Stoughton, Wisconsin at a later date.
Tom was born on November 23, 1941, in Madison, Wisconsin to Joseph and Marcella (Wedel) Tomlinson. He was raised in Madison with his brother Ralph and attended St. Raphael’s Elementary School and Edgewood Catholic High School. Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1964 with a Bachelors of Science in Agronomy. He played football for the University his freshman and sophomore years.
Tom served as a Captain in the Army from 1965 to 1968 in Yuma, Arizona. After his service in the Army he started a long career with Stauffer Chemical Company where he developed many long lasting friendships. He served there as National Sales Manager. Tom worked for a period at Centennial Warehousing in Des Moines, Iowa. He continued until his death to work as a consultant in the Agriculture Industry which he loved.
Tom’s grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life; they made him smile from the inside out. Grace, John David, Kathleen and Margaret loved their Papa dearly.
Tom was active in the AA community which had a profound impact on his life. He in turn was able to help many others in need. His family is and will remain eternally grateful to this community. Tom was a member of the Des Moines Serra Club.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and infant twin brothers. He is survived by his daughters, Ann Tomlinson of Wheaton, IL and Katy (Matt) Tomlinson Murphy of Milwaukee, WI; the mother of his daughters, Mary Hayes Tomlinson, his brother Ralph (Mary Beth) Tomlinson, and four fabulous nephews Paul, Joe, Mike and Matt and their families
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to New Malleray Abbey in Dubuque, Iowa or Catholic Charities of Des Moines.
