A man’s quest

Posted August 07, 2013 in Community Featured, Des Moines West

Des Moines area men looking to better themselves in life may have an opportunity to just that, according to Des Moines Fellowship Deacon Todd Schemper. The Des Moines Fellowship will host a new Men’s Fraternity course beginning Aug. 27.

The Des Moines Fellowship church is offering a course on manhood this fall, open to all men looking to be better dads, husbands and friends in life.

The Des Moines Fellowship church is offering a course on manhood this fall, open to all men looking to be better dads, husbands and friends in life.

“The Men’s Fraternity is kind of a three-course curriculum. Last year we did the course called ‘Winning at Work and Home,’ and this year we’re going to offer ‘The Quest for Authentic Manhood,’ ” Schemper says. “It’s kind of a DVD-speaker-led session, and then we have a small group discussion for about a half hour following the DVD.

The class will occur at 6 a.m. each scheduled day, says Schemper. The course will include three eight-week trimesters.

“This curriculum is out of Arkansas, and that’s kind of the time that they did it for men,” Schemper says, which is why the class is set before men head off to work. “It’s not really going to take away from your family time in the evening or weekends, and we’ve really tried to stick with that model.”

Schemper says he went to similar courses offered through the YMCA and is excited to bring the Men’s Fraternity courses to Des Moines Fellowship.

“ ‘The Quest for Authentic Manhood’ is kind of more of a core identity class for men, giving an overview of basic ‘Manhood’ issues, and it really kind of focuses on the questions: ‘What is a man? What am I living to be?’ ” Schemper says. “Another key point is trying to help men develop their own personal manhood plan.”

Schemper hopes for a turnout of 15 – 20 men in this fall’s session.

“We had a pretty good turnout for our session last winter,” Schemper says. “We’re definitely open to any men in the community. It’s not just for our church. We want to do it as kind of a community outreach as well, so if anybody is interested, we’re excited to open it up for other men as well.”

The class is free to attend, but the workbook that goes along with the course is $10. Anyone who cannot pay for his workbook can receive it through the church on scholarship if he needs to, says Schemper.
