June 22, 1955 – August 4, 2013
Mark Hanley, 58, of Des Moines, IA, passed away peacefully on Sunday August 5, 2013 at Methodist Hospital from complications of recently diagnosed pancreatic cancer. Mark was born in Waterloo, IA but lived in Des Moines for most of his life.
Mark graduated from Valley High School in 1973. As a young man he worked at Eddie Websters. Mark also lived and worked in Colorado. He returned to Des Moines in 1984 and married Kim Rogers. They had a daughter, Casey in 1984, and a son, Jon Kelly in 1986. Mark spent a significant portion of his career in the service industry as a popular bartender and an amazing cook at a number of Des Moines favorites such as Judge Roy Beans and the Adel Depot. He was also a successful Real Estate Agent for a number of years with ReMax and Realty Xperts in Des Moines. In more recent years Mark enjoyed working in several aspects within the airline industry until he received his Medical Certification and became employed as a Surgical Technician at Broadlawns Hospital. He was a longtime member of the Des Moines Elks Club and served as a Eucharistic Minister for over 20 years at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Mark’s family is comforted in knowing Mark approached life as something to be enjoyed. It’s clear that Mark was somebody who not only enjoyed life but helped the people around him enjoy life too. His greatest joy was to spend time with his family and friends. He delighted in spending time at his lake house in Dexter, Iowa, enjoying the outdoors and the weather, and cooking with close friends. He loved trips with his son and daughter to Las Vegas and Phoenix and visiting his grandchildren in San Francisco. Mark was also a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan and watched nearly every game. Mark was a talented artist and painted some impressive pieces. In addition to his many talents, Mark was an incredibly generous person and had the best sense of humor. He was quick to volunteer his time to anyone that needed a hand, and everyone in his presence was sure to be laughing. He had many wonderful accomplishments but the best legacy he is leaving is his family.
Mark’s life is a reminder that we all need to enjoy the time that we have, the experiences we’re offered and the people we get to share it with. Here’s to Mark…
