Ida L. Gilliland, 92, of Des Moines died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Altoona, IA. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul of which she was a long-time member. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery.

Ida was born on May 27, 1921 to James and Sylvia (Wright) Higbee. She grew up and graduated from high school in Jefferson, IA. She and Franklyn Wells Gilliland married at St. John’s by the Campus Church in Ames on July 19, 1947 then moved to Des Moines where they made a home and were blessed by five daughters.

Ida worked for over twenty years in the accounting office of the State of Iowa Board of Control (later known as the Department of Human Services) and participated in the American Business Women Association. She served on the Cathedral Church of St. Paul Altar Guild. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Des Moines Eastern Star Chapter 89 and a member of the Daughters of the Nile. She was a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color Honored Degree from the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Ida enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish Ida’s memory include her husband of 66 years, Frank Gilliland; five daughters, Jeanne Andrews of Houston, TX, Marcia (Mel) Bancroft of Des Moines, Sandra (Nelson) Kraschel of Clear Lake, IA, Carole (Tom) Seibert of Marietta, GA and Joanne (Tom) Dixon of Eagan, MN. Her legacy continues through her 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren including, Angela Hild with husband, Joey, and their three children; Michael Andrews; Matthew Andrews and his two sons; Mark Bancroft with wife, Leah, and their child; Morgan Merical with husband, Kyle, and their child; James Kraschel; Kate Kraschel; Elizabeth Kraschel; Christopher Seibert with his wife, Stephanie, and their three children; Nicholas Seibert with his wife, Rachelle, and their two children; Samuel Seibert; Emily Seibert; Joseph Seibert; Abbie Seibert; Jennifer Dixon; and Michael Dixon. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Robert, James and John Higbee.
