Doris Eby, 76, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on January 19, 1937, the only child of George and Lillie Eby in Beatrice, Nebraska. When Doris was four, the family moved to Lincoln, NE, where she attended Bethany grade school, Northeast Jr. High and High School and the University of Nebraska.
Doris graduated cum laude from the University with a B.S. degree in Home Economics, with a major in Food and Nutrition in Business in 1959. Two days after graduation she moved to Racine, Wisconsin for her first job as Home Economist with Hamilton Beach small appliance company. While there she tested appliances, developed recipes and wrote cook books and promotional materials as well as traveling extensively to demonstrate the products. Doris valued the career experience and the many lasting relationships she made in Racine.
In 1965, Doris joined Meredith in Des Moines, as Sr. Writer for Better Homes and Gardens Magazine food department. In 1968 she was named food editor, then Sr. Dept. Head, Foods for Meredith magazine and books. In 1983 she was promoted to V.P. Editorial Director, Meredith Magazine Group. Doris always claimed she had the “best job in the world.” She had the good fortune to travel nationally and internationally, having many wonderful experiences and making many friends. She retired in 1992, and moved to The Lodge, a retirement community in West Des Moines, Iowa in 2003.
Following retirement Doris volunteered for a number of organizations, took classes in many areas, both academic and creative, and continued to travel, including to China, Australia and Europe.
The thing Doris prized most was family and friends who shared her life. She felt blessed to have colleagues who supported her and counseled her in her career and were also cherished friends. Her circle of friends ranged from those she had known since kindergarten to those she recently had gotten to know.
A Memorial Service for Doris will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn’s Chapel 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum, West Des Moines.
Doris requested that memorials be sent to: The Homestead, an organization serving people with autism, at 1625 Adventureland Drive, Altoona, IA 50009. Doris served on their Board of Directors for many years and was especially dedicated to helping the organization grow.
