It is time to go back to school, and your library has lots of fun things to see and do during the last days of summer and the first days of school.

We are busily preparing for the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale which will be during our Sweet Corn Festival here in Adel. The pre-sale, for Friends of the Adel Public Library, will be on Friday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The book sale is open for the public on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Want to get in early? Anyone can join the friends of the Adel Public Library for just $5. The sale will be in our community room, and the library will be closed on Saturday, August 10 during the sale and festival.

The library will welcome children’s author Rebecca Janni for a reading and signing on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Rebecca Janni “is the author of ‘Jammy Dance,’ and the ‘Every Cowgirl’ series, including her newest releases, ‘Nellie Sue, Happy Camper’ and ‘Every Cowgirl Goes to School.’ She has an MAT in English and enjoys teaching composition and creative writing. She lives in Iowa with her husband, four children, and a dog.” For more information visit her website at www.rebeccajanni.com. We’ll be doing fun crafts and games with Janni during this special story time.

The library is excited to welcome Minnesota author Frederick Blanch for a reading and signing of his latest book on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. Blanch is an accomplished writer of poetry, prose and scripts; his latest book of writings is called “Last Words: Frederick’s Bionary.” “Last Words” was published in September of 2011 and received a nomination for a Minnesota Book Award. The word bionary comes from combining the words biography and dictionary, and the book follows a dictionary format of boldfaced “words” followed by “definitions,” ranging from a few words to several pages.

Our annual Lego Building Contest for all school-aged kids will be on Monday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Come and let your imagination run wild as you design and build great things. Awards will be given in many categories to celebrate your designs.

It’s tea time. Our annual American Girl Tea Time will be on Monday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. You must pre-register for this event as space is limited.

Come to the library on Tuesday, Aug. 6 between 9 and 11 a.m. and you can touch a truck. We’ll have various trucks, tractors, fire engines and school busses on hand in the Adel City Hall parking lot for kids to explore. Thanks to the City of Adel, the Adel Fire Department, A-D-M Schools, Ashley and Matt Pelzer and John Finneseth for lending their time and equipment to this event.
