Home schooling and educational resources
Johnston Public Library has a great collection of homeschooling and educational resources available in the adult and juvenile nonfiction collection. Browse our catalog online at www.johnstonlibrary.com to find the perfect study guide, teaching resource or reference material.

• Learning Express. Think of Learning Express as your free online tutor — this site will help you prepare for almost any standardized test including ACT, ASVAB, civil service, cosmetology, real estate, EMS, GED, GMAT, GRE, SAT, TOEFL, citizenship and more. Test preparation includes immediate scoring of more than 770 practice tests, complete answer explanations and online tutorials. It also includes skill building for all ages — elementary school-age through adults, as well as job search resources and computer and internet basics. Log in at www.johnstonlibrary.com using your 14-character library card number.

• Mango Languages and Muzzy Online. Is foreign language study a part of the curriculum this year? Let us help with two online language learning databases. Mango Languages is our language-learning resource for adults, and Muzzy Online is the world’s No. 1 language course specifically designed for children. To try Muzzy Online or Mango Languages, click on the database link under Virtual Library at www.johnstonlibrary.com.

• Research help. Have a research project, but don’t know where to start? Visit our Virtual Library link at www.johnstonlibrary.com. Research databases like EbscoHost, Student Research Center and World Book Online are a wonderful place to find answers to difficult questions. EbscoHost is also useful for finding articles from scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers on virtually any topic. Stop by the Reference Desk the next time you are at the library for a one-on-one tutorial of these databases.

The Useful Links button at www.johnstonlibrary.com is another great place to begin researching a topic. This page of our website features a collection of research guides on popular topics including genealogy, computers for beginners, Iowa history and government and home and garden. Research guides provide resources in multiple formats in the library and online, and are intended to serve as a starting point for your own research.
