John Martin Van Wagenen, 44, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Mercy West Lakes Medical Center in West Des Moines, IA. Cremation rites have been accorded and memorial graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Jack was born February 27, 1969, in Silver Spring, MD to John Alan and Rosalie Linda (Martin) Van Wagenen. He attended elementary and high schools in Silver Spring, MD; served in the US Army from 1990 – 2001 attaining the rank of Sergeant, was a paratrooper, and received an honorable discharge. His military service included state-side deployments in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Colorado, Oklahoma and Iowa as well as overseas deployments to Korea, the Middle East and Bosnia. Jack moved to West Des Moines in 2001. In civilian life, he was employed as a biomedical equipment technician, maintaining and repairing computer driven medical systems, including MRI, CAT scan, and Nuclear Imaging Systems. He was a Star Wars and computer gaming enthusiast. Jack was an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Redskins. He loved his pets, especially his Pit Bull Thunder, Schnauzer mix Bonita, and Siamese Cat Selena.

Jack is survived by his wife of 18 years, Loretta, three daughters, Alonna B. Lee of Florence, SC, Ashley B. Lee of West Des Moines, IA and Colleen B. Van Wagenen of the home; two granddaughters: Sophie N. Bleimehl of West Des Moines, IA and Aubree L. Schulz of Florence SC; his parents, Jack and Linda Van Wagenen of Baltimore, MD; his siblings, Lynn M. (Michael) Rehn of Stevensville, MD, Carol A. (Craig) Jones of Rockville, MD; nephews, Curtis and Christopher Jones of Rockville, MD and niece Shelby Rehn of Stevensville, MD.
