Elinor Barrett was born July 9, 1919 in Malvern, Iowa to Fred and Ina (Lisle) Farquhar. She departed this life July 25, 2013 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa, having lived a full and active life to the age of 94.
She attended school at Malvern through her freshman year. The family moved to Jefferson and she graduated from the Jefferson High School in 1938. She worked for Dr. J.K. Johnson, Jr. for a year and a half.
On November 26, 1939, Elinor Farquhar was united in marriage to Cecil Barrett at the old Jefferson Methodist Church. Two daughters were born to this union. Elinor and Cecil moved to the Barrett farm northeast of Jefferson where Cecil farmed.
Elinor was active in 4-H, being a leader for 12 years. She later did survey work for Iowa State University, worked at American Trampoline and Jefferson Telephone Co., managed the Greene Co. R.E.C. appliance center and was advertising manager for the Bee & Herald Newspaper.
Elinor was a member of the Jefferson First United Methodist Church and Women’s Circle, the Culture Club and a Chapter member of the P.E.O. She enjoyed decorating, refinishing antique furniture, playing bridge and in earlier years, water & snow skiing.
She and Cecil did a lot of traveling in the U.S., visiting all 48 States, Alaska, the Caribbean and a number of European countries. They spent a lot of quality time with family and friends at their home at Lake Okoboji, which was purchased by Elinor’s grandfather in 1918. For a number of years, they spent several months in the warmer climates of Florida, Arizona and California.
Elinor is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Margot and James Hinchliff of Chicago, Illinois and Marlys and Jerry Ostrander of Jefferson; three grandchildren, Lisa Green of Lakeville, Minnesota, Jay and Debi Ostrander of Jefferson and Dr. Jamie and Donna Ostrander of Carroll; seven great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Nathan and Emily Green and Jason, Justin, Hailey and Allison Ostrander; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Cecil in 2008.
A celebration of Elinor’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. Organ music will be provided by Sheryl Sloan. Musical selections, “How Great Thou Art” and “The Lord is my Life and my Salvation” will be sung by soloist Gary Haupert.
Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Bravard, Mike Benson, Gail McDonald, Bob Ausberger, Dennis Ostrander and Don Dunlop.
