March 2, 1949 – July 23, 2013
Steven Alan Gunson, 64, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 surrounded by his family and friends. Steve was born on March 2, 1949 to Thomas (Roy) Gunson and Nadine (Baker) Gunson in Des Moines, IA at Iowa Methodist Hospital. Steve graduated from North High School in 1967 and Iowa State University in 1971 where he received his psychology degree. He received his Masters Degree in Environmental Health from the University of Minnesota in 1974 and received his Masters Degree in Public Administration from Drake University in 1977. Steve married Barbara Denny in 1971 and they were blessed with a son Nathan Thomas Gunson in 1990. Steve was remarried to Kandi Reindl in 2004 and they spent the last nine years having the time of their lives traveling, camping, spending time with family, going to dinner with friends and laughing together.
Steve started working for the City of Des Moines in the summer of 1968 as a part time employee. Except for the years at the University of Minnesota, he spent the last 45 years working for the City. He climbed the ladder through the years and was the Deputy Director for the Community Development Department at the time of his death. Besides working for the Community Development Department, he was recruited to work on special assignments in the City Manager’s Office on several occasions and was most proud of his work implementing policies for local government.
Steve had a huge passion for travel and made several trips to Europe where he enjoyed visiting Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Steve and his wife Kandi recently spent two weeks in Paris, France and were able to visit Normandy during the D-Day celebration to witness where his father Roy fought for his country during World War II. Steve would plan trips six months in advance by buying books and reading up on where to stay, eat and tour. Steve always said he wanted to be the next Rick Steves traveling the world and writing books about his travels. Steve also had a love for camping, reading, the outdoors, coolers, jackets and a good dirty martini after work on Fridays.
Steve is survived by his wife Kandi, son Nathan (Heather) Gunson, stepson Nick Amadeo and his fiancé, Jill Hannasch and grandson Jackson Amadeo all of Des Moines, IA. Brother Mike Gunson (Melinda) and niece Ashley Gunson of New York City, NY; father and mother-in-law Jack and Gloria Reindl of Osceola IA; brother-in-law Randy Reindl of Clive, IA and his children Lukus and Madison Reindl; brother-in-law, Chris Reindl (Jodi) of Martensdale, IA and their children Tyler and Kylie Reindl; cousin, more like a brother, Jon Gunson (Judy) and their children Justin Gunson and Morgan Thompson of Breckenridge, CO as well as many other extended family members.
