Robert Buettell, 89, of Maquoketa, and formerly of Perry, Iowa died on Friday, July 19, 2013 at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until service time.  There will also be visitation at the Murdock Funeral Home, in Perry on Wednesday, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. July 24, 2013.  Burial will be at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa with Military Honors.

Robert was born on July 27, 1923 in Mitchell, SD to Dr. E. D. and Imogene (Ball) Buettell. He was united in marriage to Muriel Doane on March 28, 1948 in Mitchell, SD.  Robert attended the University of Southern California, and after the war, finished his degree at the University of South Dakota.  He managed lumber yards in South Dakota and Iowa before attending Worsham Mortuary School in Chicago, earning his Funeral Directors license.  He worked at Workman-Timeon Funeral home and later at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa retiring in 1988.

He served in the United States Army as a Dental Technician and Medical Corpsman during World War II in Europe, and also served at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs during the Korean War.  Robert was a member of the Perry American Legion, Lions Club, Rotary, and Masonic Lodge.  He played the trumpet and trombone, performing in multiple school bands, and also played professionally with territory bands and with national touring bands playing at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.  In earlier years he had worked summers on the Milwaukee Road and had a lifelong interest in railroading. He golfed and took his greatest pleasure with his family, most recently his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter Margaret J. “Peggy” (Mrs. Glenn) Bartelt of Maquoketa, one grandson Jeremy (Kate) Bartelt of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and two great-grandchildren Mackenzie and Miles Bartelt.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 56 years, who was his childhood sweetheart on May 5, 2004, and one brother T. Dwight Buettell on July 4, 2010.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
