Q: Can chiropractic care help infants?

Posted July 24, 2013 in Advice Column, Boone

A: Absolutely! The birth process is one of the most physically traumatic events a person experiences. It has been estimated that 95 percent of infants will have subluxations in their spine after birth

Subluxations in an infant’s spine will affect his or her body much like an adult. They can lead to muscle pain and inflammation, causing discomfort for the child. Neurological symptoms can also be present due to birth trauma to the cervical spine such as torticollis, Klumpke’s palsy and Erb’s palsy. Decreased nerve function in other parts of the spine could cause digestive problems such as reflux and regurgitation, constipation and diarrhea.

A common problem with infants is disturbed sleeping patterns. When they have an irritation to their nervous or musculoskeletal system, the only way they can communicate that discomfort is through crying, resulting in a colicky baby. Often after being adjusted, infants will sleep very well due to the release of irritation to their spine and nerves. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a very serious and often unexplainable problem that has recently been shown to have correlation to spinal problems. One study showed that 10 of 11 SIDS cases demonstrated atlas inversion, which puts a great amount of pressure on the brain stem and vagus nerve, causing respiration difficulties.

Chiropractic is also very safe for infants. Our doctors use very gentle techniques to minimize discomfort to the child. Give us a call to see if chiropractic care is the right choice for your baby.
