More than 133,000 people attend Broadway productions at the Civic Center in 2012-2013
Overall attendance of Broadway productions fills the Civic Center seats to 84.1 percent capacity
DES MOINES, Iowa – Des Moines Performing Arts announced today that ticket sales for the Willis Broadway Series in fiscal year 2012-2013 reached $7,480,409, generating an estimated economic impact of $26 million to the community. The organization’s fiscal year 2012-2013 ended June 30.
Approximately 133,262 guests attended seven productions in the series during fiscal year 2012-2013, which was anchored by the Tony Award® winning Broadway blockbusters, WAR HORSE and THE BOOK OF MORMON. Overall attendance of the Broadway productions went from 74.6 percent capacity in 2011-2012 to 84.1 percent capacity in 2012-2013.
“We are thrilled to finish another extraordinary year for the Willis Broadway Series,” said Des Moines Performing Arts President and CEO Jeff Chelesvig. “The continued success of the series is significantly influenced by the support of our 12,193 season ticket holders and they are a fantastic representation of Iowans genuinely embracing Broadway.” Des Moines Performing Arts is one of the few theater organizations in the nation who present one-week touring Broadway productions with a season ticket base of more than 10,000.
The economic impact total is an estimate based on a formula developed by the Broadway League, the national trade association for the commercial theater industry. For every dollar of touring Broadway ticket revenue, a national average of three and a half dollars is invested back into the local economy, benefitting hotels, restaurants, retailers and other businesses.
Also worth noting is more than 307,000 patrons attended 366 performances at the Civic Center, Stoner Theater and Temple Theater in fiscal year 2012-2013. Many of the performances were part of the organization’s seven series: the Willis Broadway Series, the Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series, The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, the Applause Series, the Live at the Temple Concert Series and Lunch Unplugged.
Chelesvig added, “We are proud to present world-class entertainment, diverse programming and memorable experiences for our community year after year, as our productions influence the quality of life, both economically and culturally.”
