John R. Cook, 20, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 21, 2013, with his parents at his bedside.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2013, from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Augustin’s Catholic Church in Des Moines. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Augustin’s Catholic Church. Lunch to follow at the Wakonda Club. John was born on September 25, 1992. He attended Greenwood Elementary, Callanan Middle School and Theodore Roosevelt High School, graduating in 2011. John was a member of the Roosevelt show choir and wrestling team. He qualified and wrestled for Team Iowa at the Junior Nationals Tournament in Fargo, ND. John was a dedicated competitor. John enjoyed many summers at Raccoon Valley Little League and the Wakonda Club.

John was founder and president of the Guts Gear Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to bringing awareness about children with renal failure and supplying them with educational and entertainment items during dialysis. Prior to his death John was employed as a bat boy for the Iowa Cubs. John was a lifelong Cubs fan, traveling to games at spring training in Arizona and Wrigley Field. John was at Wrigley Field two weeks before his death to cheer on his beloved Cubs to a win. John loved baseball, wrestling, and his friends.

John is survived by his parents, Cyndi and Guy and his sister Meredith (Boston, MA) and his dog and best buddy, Jimi. As well as his grandparents, Mary Burton (Polk City, IA) and Janet and Larry Kennedy (LeMars, IA) and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

John is preceded in death by his grandfathers Jack Cook and James Burton.
