When Jonathan and Amy Kort were ready to buy a new home, they knew they wanted a “forever home.” They were moving from the northwest side of Ankeny and had a goal to build a long-lasting home in the new Prairie Trail neighborhood.
Located just north of Oralabor Road off of State Street, Prairie Trail is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in town. It’s known for unique styles of homes, new schools, Dean Park and Cascade Falls water park. The Korts decided Prairie Trail was the place they wanted to plant their feet and start a family.
Jonathan and Amy had their home custom built by Brezina Homes and moved in October 2011. Knowing this would be their home to grow old in, they built it to last. They chose stone countertops along with hardwood and tiles floors. Being “green” is important to the Korts, so they installed energy efficient windows, lighting, appliances and even dual flush toilets. Their garden is watered by the collected water in their rain barrel.
Entertaining friends and family was something they kept in mind while building their home. On average, the Korts host a gathering about once a week. The house has an open floor plan with more than 2,300 square feet — plenty of room to accommodate their guests.
One of Amy’s favorite rooms in her house is the kitchen. She is a professional baker and runs her company, Muffins ’n Such, out of her home. Her kitchen is a baker’s dream with dual convection ovens, a touch faucet, an induction stovetop and a commercial refrigerator and freezer.
With summer in full swing Jonathan, Amy and their 1-year-old daughter, Abigail, are enjoying spending time in Prairie Trail. They like meeting the families in the neighborhood and have made some good friends. There is even a Facebook group specifically for the community to share events, stories and ideas.
The Korts knew exactly what they wanted in their “forever home” and being able to custom build in Prairie Trail has made their dream a reality. Amy says they plan to “stay here until the nursing home.”
