Howard McCune Hughes passed away at Scottish Rite Park on July 10, 2013. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday July 14, 2013 at Scottish Rite Park Penthouse. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Balch Cemetery, Formoso, KS

Howard was born July 12, 1917 the son of Edgar J. Hughes and Mary McCune in Formoso, Kansas, where he spent 32 years. He attended Kansas State University earning a degree in Agriculture and was a member of the Farm House Fraternity. After graduation he worked for K-State’s Extension Office in Manhattan. Howard then served in the US Army as a Calvary Officer during WWII, stationed in England, France and Germany. On July 24, 1942 he married Shirley Glens and they enjoyed 64 years together Upon returning home he worked for the Jewell County Conservation District while farming near Formoso. In 1948 he became Riley County Conservationist in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1957 they moved to Hays, Kansas where he worked as the Area Conservationist. In 1965 they then moved to Des Moines and he worked as Iowa Assistant State Soil Conservationist before retiring in January of 1977. After retirement they wintered in Mesa, Arizona and traveled extensively and enjoyed life. In November 1995 they moved to Scottish Rite Park where they very much enjoyed living. Howard belong to the American Legion and the Formoso/Mankato Masonic Lodges and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
