Helen Jarvis McReynolds, 82, died peacefully at her home in Des Moines on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 15 at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17 at Cache Cemetery in Cache, OK.

Helen was a born on September 12, 1930 in Cache, OK to Garold and Mildred (Fleshman) Jarvis. She graduated from Lawton High School in 1947 then attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK for two years before marrying William Claxon McReynolds in 1951. They settled in Des Moines in 1983 after raising four children and living in Kansas City, MO, Saginaw, MI, Scottsdale, AZ and Bronxville, NY.

Helen was active in the Des Moines community as President of the Board of Directors of the Botanical Center, Proteus Club, Petticoat Mutual, and The Barbican. She was secretary and board member of Orchard Place and Claxons Smokehouse and Grill in Altoona. She volunteered for the Salvation Army Christmas drive, the United Way of Central Iowa and Head Start. She was particularly fond of hosting her monthly Mercy Group.

Helen was devoted to her family. She will also be remembered for her participation in the 1960’s civil rights movement and her TV appearances as Madam Zenobia, a TV astrologer in the 1970’s. After the death of her husband in 1989 she devoted her time to serving the community. One of her favorite accomplishments was being a published author in the Sunday New York Times.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Billie Jarvis McReynolds of Scottsdale, AZ, Steven Martin McReynolds of Pace, FL, and Andrew Claxon McReynolds of Altoona; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; daughter, Kathryn Baker McReynolds; parents; and two sisters, Madelyn McDonald and Wynona Prestage.

Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 14 at Iles Funeral Homes – Dunn’s Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cache Cemetery Restoration Fund.
