Frances Cowles, 83, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the home in which she was born, surrounded by her family and friends. Per her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Madrid.
Frances was born December 17, 1929, in Madrid to Francis and Catheryn (Suer) O’Deay. She graduated from Madrid High School in 1948 and received her nursing degree from Mercy College of Nursing in 1951. Frances worked 26 years at Mercy Hospital in surgery. She was an active member of St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, Senior Citizens of Madrid, and an advocate at the Madrid Home. Frances loved to watch her grandchildren in sports. In her free time she enjoyed volunteering and being of service to others.
Frances will be missed by her husband, Gerald of Madrid; her children, Christina Simpson of Des Moines, Mary Cowles-Bennethum of Madrid, Karen (Mark) Humphrey of Hannibal, MO, Belle Cowles of Des Moines, Teresa Becker of Perry, Tim Cowles of Madrid, Patrick (Janet) Cowles of Burns, WY, and Mildred (Yvonne) Jones-Cowles of Des Moines; her siblings, Sr. Mary Ann O’Deay of Milwaukee, WI, Teresa Swalla of Madrid, and John (Ana) O’Deay of Los Angeles, CA; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Gerald Mac Cowles, Jr. and her brothers, Dan O’Deay and Tommy O’Deay; and her grandsons, Charles Mac Cowles and Timothy.
