To raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our community and to help stock the Food Pantry shelves, Waukee Christian Church is hosting a Community Fun-raiser: the first annual Family Fun Festival. The event is free and open to the public. The only admission “fee” is an item of non-perishable food (cash donations are also accepted).
Hunger is a real issue in our community. A US Department of Agriculture survey reveals that 7.7% of Iowans go to bed hungry. Of those who seek emergency food assistance, 35% (more than 1/3) had to choose between paying rent and buying food. That number is staggering. Add to that the fact that, in the United States, 96 billion pounds of food are wasted each year and it brings the issue a little closer to home.
In 2005, several Waukee churches decided to work together in an effort to respond to this need. The result was the Waukee Area Food Pantry. The Food Pantry serves residents living in the Waukee School District and those referred by local churches. And there is always a need.
The first 250 people who make a donation will be served a free meal, and everyone can enter the prize drawing. While you’re there, enjoy games, crafts, and activities: take a turn in the inflatable obstacle course, watch a puppet show, try your aim at the dunk tank, explore a Waukee police car or fire truck, scale the climbing wall, and roast marshmallows.
Local churches and organizations are also getting in on the fun by submitting homemade pies and cookies for the Blue Ribbon Bake Off. The Celebrity Judges include: Mayor Bill Peard, Waukee School Superintendent Dr. Dave Wilkerson, Chamber of Commerce Board President Vickie Dornfield, and Police Public Relations Officer Mackenzie Sposeto. Come support your favorite bakers.
There is something for everyone. But even more important, it’s a chance to share something with everyone!
The Family Fun Festival will be held on August 4th from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Waukee Christian Church, one mile west of Waukee on Hickman Road and T Avenue. The rain date is August 7th.
The Waukee Area Christian Services partners are: Immanuel Lutheran, Point of Grace, Waukee United Methodist, Waukee Community, Westview, St. Boniface Catholic, Westwind, and Waukee Christian Churches.
