We fell in love with this place — my dining companion and I — just a few years ago when it first opened.
Imagine our surprise when we arrived earlier this spring to find the doors locked and a sign on the door indicating that Chen Garden was closed for remodeling.
Fortunately, Chen Garden is open again and with a fresh, new face, more comfortable seating and an even greater variety of menu items. The overall décor and arrangement of the restaurant remains largely unchanged; what’s most appreciated is how the new booth height makes for a softer, more relaxed dining atmosphere.
The seating is more luxurious, and the glass surrounds create a more private feel in the booths nearest to the buffet area.
As for the food, it’s as wonderful as ever; there’s just more of it, and lots more variety. We found delectables we had never seen before on the seafood buffet and, between the two of us, managed to sample just about all of them.
For me, it’s just fun to see how many ways you can find chicken prepared. There’s chicken with broccoli, chicken with Chinese vegetables, Hunan chicken, Hong Kong chicken, honey chicken, Kung Pao chicken, chicken with cashew nuts, chicken with garlic sauce, curry chicken —and, if that’s not enough, there’s even a menu item called “Delicious Chicken.”
Another new feature is the barbecue grill next to the already-popular hibachi grill. And while there are plenty of new things here to sample — from beef tips to barbecue ribs — all the old favorites, including the fresh fruit and desserts are right where you expect to find them.
In all, Chen Garden boats more than 200 different food items on the buffet. With a more comfortable dining experience within, it gives us all the more time to sample them all, one by one.Chen Garden
