“Dig into Reading!” Read for Fun Prizes – Join the Library’s Summer Reading Games
The Library provides Summer Reading Games for all ages. Sign up is now available. Union State Bank is donating T-Shirts for the children’s prizes. Kids – come play the reading game, and watch out for the ants! Teens – pick up your BINGO reading log at the Library. Adults – we have fun in store for you, too. Read more books — get more prizes.
Attention, Preschoolers! Time for the Library’s Annual Butter-Making!
Our regular Story-Time for Preschoolers ages three through pre-K will meet as usual on Wednesday and Thursday, July 10 and 11, at 10:30 am, with an important twist – the children get to churn real butter. Best of all, they get to “Dig into the Goodies” and eat the fruits of their labors. No registration is required – Pick July 10th or 11th, and bring your child for a fun time designed just for them. Preschoolers can also participate in the Summer Reading Game, and earn lots of prizes, by having their parents read to them. Be sure to visit with the librarians while you are here – it’s not too late to register for the Summer Reading Game.
“Beneath Our Feet,” presented (with animals!) by Blank Park Zoo, July 16, 1:00
Yes! Blank Park Zoo returns to the Library on July 16, at 2:00 pm. This program is for children who have completed kindergarten through completed fifth grade. Zoo staffers will talk about animals that live underground as part of the Dig into Reading theme of the Summer Reading Program. Attendance counts as one book read for those playing the Summer Reading Game. Please register by calling the Library at 515-462-1731. It is free and open to those who register.
“What’s Neat Beneath Our Feet?” presented by the Science Center of Iowa, July 26, 1:00
We are bringing in the professionals! Science Center of Iowa will be at the Library on July 26, to help us discover things that are living underground. When we say “Dig into Reading,” we are definitely having fun with the “digging!” This program is for children who have completed kindergarten through completed fifth grade. Summer Reading Program holds Grand Finale Picnic at the Park, August 4, 5:00
Wear your new Library T-shirt, and come to the North Shelter House of the City Park for picnic and games on August 4th from 5-7:00 pm. There will be food! There will be fun! If you have earned your T-shirt, you have also earned a free ticket to the picnic for your whole family. RSVP required.
Book Discussion on “Room: A novel,” July 25, 7:00 pm
On July 25, the Evening Book Discussion Group will be discussing the novel “Room,” by Emma Donoghue. The room is the place where 5-year Jack is being raised by his captive mother. It is the story of a young woman who was kidnapped at the age of 19, and enslaved ever since. “Ma” however, has an escape plan. Can she trust her 5-year-old to help her back to freedom? Please join the discussion on July 25 at 7:00 pm in the Library Meeting Room. It is free and open to the public.
Madison County Genealogical Society prepares for County Fair
You can pick up your Genealogy entry form for the Madison County Fair at the Library, on the Genealogy research table.
Resource of the Week – FREEGAL — free downloadable music!!
Music-lovers, charge up the iPods, iPads, smart phones, and other devices – Freegal is now available from the Library. By going to the Freegal app from the App Store for Apple devices, or to Google Download Manager for Android devices, and using your Library card & PIN, you can download your favorite songs, for free! The limit is 3 songs per week. Once you download them on your device, they are yours to keep.
· Toddler Tuesday – every Tuesday at 10:30 for ages 0-2.
· Story Time – every Wednesday & Thursday at 10:30 for preschoolers ages 3 and up.
· Teens with Tonja – every 1st Saturday from 2:30-4:00. Call the Library to sign up.
· Writer’s Workshop and Reading to Rover – both programs will take a summer break and re-convene in September.
