Harold Miller, the son of Stanley and Lela (Evans) Miller, was born April 12, 1919 at Grainton, Nebraska and left this life July 5, 2013 at the Greene County Long Term Care Facility in Jefferson, Iowa. He lived his life to the age 94 years, 2 months and 23 days.
Harold had two older sisters and after the death of his mother when he was only 5 years old; his father remarried which gave Harold a couple more step- siblings. At the age of 17, Harold moved from Nebraska to Iowa. There he met Darlene Carrick and they were married July 29, 1941 at the Scranton Friends Church north of Scranton. Four children were born to this union. When Harold and Darlene were first married and farming, they picked 79 acres of corn by hand. Harold loved farming and his crops included oats, corn and soybeans. Harold was always proud of the livestock that he raised. They retired from farming and moved into Churdan where they lived until they moved to the Garden Apartments in Jefferson.
Harold was an active member of the Churdan United Methodist Church and served as an usher for church services and funerals for many years. Harold had many hobbies including bowling, working with wood which included making Grandfather clocks, watching TV sports, and pitching horseshoes. He won many trophies’s and awards in horseshoe competitions.
Harold is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Darlene of Jefferson, four children; LeRoy (Marlene) Miller of Churdan, Deloris (Elmer) St. Clair of Des Moines, Duane Miller of Churdan and Diane (Kevin) Howe of Johnston, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a sister, Delores Berkey of Eugene, Oregon and a half brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bernice Richtie and a half brother and sister.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 3:00 pm at the Churdan United Methodist Church with Rev. David Arulnathan officiating. Burial was made in the Highland Cemetery in Churdan. Musical selections at the service were, “Amazing Grace” sung by the congregation and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” sung by soloist, Kenneth Morlan and accompanied by organist, Janice Tilley.
Serving as caskets bearers were Harold’s grandsons; Mark Miller, Jeff Miller, David Miller, Kourtney Miller, Nicholas Miller, Kyle Miller and Jon St. Clair. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Harold’s granddaughters; Jodi Van Bell, Tracy Funke, Kate Howe and Kristen Howe.
