Get Your Rear In Gear 5K promotes colon cancer awareness

Posted July 08, 2013 in Web Exclusives

Over 1200 participants are expected to attend the 4th annual Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk at Raccoon River Park on Saturday, August 24th, 2013. Runners, walkers, and volunteers will gather to raise funds and awareness about the importance of colorectal cancer screening and to provide support for those affected by the nation’s number two cancer killer. Funds raised at the event will be invested in Davids Fight.org.

Davids Fight was created in memory of David Kinman, who lost his hard-fought battle at 37 years old.  Davids Fight is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt charitable foundation committed to fighting colorectal cancer by building awareness, helping those battling the disease through the Snow Angels program, and offering colonoscopy screening to those who are uninsured or underinsured through the Fighting Funds program.

The Presenting Sponsor this year is Mercy Gastroenterology Clinic.  This year’s Supporting Sponsors includee The Iowa Clinic, Mercy Cancer Center, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Central Financial Group, Perdue Inc., Ameriprise Financial Advisors, Kinman Glass, Citywide Heating and Air Conditioning, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa, The Iowa Department of Public Health – Iowa Get Screened Program, Fareway, Caribou Coffee, Hydrive Energy Drinks and David’s Fight.org.

Local Event Director, David McCluskey, describes why he chooses to organize the event, “It is very important to bring a voice to those battling colon cancer, the number two cause of cancer deaths in the State of Iowa.  This is the cancer that nobody has wanted to talk about, but we are working to change that, through events like Get Your Rear in Gear.”

Registration for the 4th Annual Get Your Rear in Gear Des Moines is now open.  The event will begin with the Kid’s Fun Run for children, age 12 and under, followed by a chip-timed 5K Run.  Whether you are a competitive or leisurely runner, walk the course, take advantage of the 1 mile short loop, or just want to people watch, you are welcome to join us. Information on registration, volunteering, fundraising or sponsoring is available online at www.gyrigDM.com.
