Art Berven, age 93, passed away on July 6, 2013, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3010 – 52nd St., Des Moines, with visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 8, at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road.

Art was born on September 9, 1919, in Hamilton County, IA and married his wife of 70 years, Ruth N. Sharp, on November 14, 1942. He graduated from Randall High School, attended St. Olaf College, and graduated from Capital City Commercial College. He was owner/manager of Berven & Company, Office Machine Supply Company, and Capital Personnel Service. He served as treasurer of National Personnel Associates; council member, treasurer, and usher at Grace Lutheran Church; treasurer of Grace Lutheran Foundation; and treasurer of Northwest Kiwanis Club. He volunteered at the DMARC Food Pantry and American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; son and daughter-in-law Norman and Barbara Mittelstaedt Berven of Waunakee, WI; daughter Barbara Berven of Des Moines; and daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Don York of Ankeny; grandchildren Jennifer Berven, Kris and Marc Montgomery, and Gregg York; great-grandchildren Chelsey Scott, Taylor and Jessica Ramsey, Nicole Germaux, and Jessica, Kaitlyn, and Hannah Montgomery; great-great grandchildren Sage Germaux and Violet Brubaker; aunt Marie Kittelson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Jack Lynch, Wayne and Erika Sharp, Bob and Helen Sharp, Larry and Janis Sharp, Joyce Sharp, and Arlene Sharp; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Nels and Anna Berven, sister Frances Lynch, and daughter-in-law Stella Stone Berven.
