Civic Music Association Announces New Board Members

DES MOINES – Civic Music Association is pleased to announce the appointment of new Board of Directors for the 2013-14 season: Joel Fortney, Mary Kay Tamasi, Richard Hodges, Sheila Navis & Eric Ferring.  Board Members serve three-year terms and were sworn in at the Civic Music Association Annual Meeting held on June 26, 2013.

06733AE8-AC93-4DBA-B55A-7D8D04F05932Joel Fortney is portfolio manager of the Principal Global Investors Mid-Cap Value Equity Fund with approximately $600 million in assets under management. During his 12 -year career with PGI, he has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg/BusinessWeek Magazine for his individual investment performance as well as his thought leadership in the subject of behavioral finance. Joel earned a B.B.A. from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Joel has earned the designation of CFA Charterholder.

She has lived in Minneapolis for the last thirty years. Mary Kay is President & CEO of Continental Lift Truck, a wholesale forklift company that buys and sells used forklifts all over the world. She purchased a condo in downtown Des Moines on the river, last October. She still has a home in Minneapolis but spends the majority of time in Des Moines.

88586D52-9D67-453B-9BC8-3FB014B55E39Richard Hodges, originally from Clinton, Iowa, attained a B.A. from Cornell College and an M.A. from the University of Iowa. Richard worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for 27 years. He returned to Des Moines from Iowa City in the summer of 2012 after spending 11 years of retirement enjoying country living and community/area culture in Iowa City. The desire to downsize from a country home to a condominium within walking access to cultural venues, outdoor recreational activities and lifelong friends brought him to downtown Des Moines.

00EF7CCF-4BFD-41EB-B916-8F25DDBE1B9BSheila Navis currently serves as the Executive Director of the Rural Iowa Independent Telephone Association (RIITA) and has worked for trade associations throughout her career.  She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and received her designation in 1995 by the American Society of Association Executives.  An Iowa native growing up in the Des Moines area, she now resides in Beaverdale.

Eric has won the Drake Honors Recital and National Association of Teachers of Singing District Competition three years in a row, as well as receiving 2nd place at the International Crescendo Music Awards last March. Eric has sung with orchestras locally and regionally and will be performing at Seagle Music Colony in the Summer of 2013 for his third season. Eric has been the President of the Residence Hall Association at Drake University for two years and will be a Community Assistant at Drake West Village in the fall.
