July 4, 1922 – June 24, 2013
Fred Boresi, 90, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013 at Karen Acres in Urbandale, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Madrid, Iowa where he was a parishioner. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Madrid.
Fred was born July 4, 1922 in Madrid, Iowa to Victor and Aldegonda Boresi. In his late teens, Fred began his lifelong passion of playing the accordion. His first accordion was purchased for him by his brother Joe. Fred began playing professionally and met his future wife, Marchelle, when he was hired to provide accordion accompaniment for her stage act. They were married on June 7, 1952 and moved to his hometown of Madrid. In 1954, Fred and Marchelle purchased an interest in Professional Music Center in Des Moines and later became the sole owners of the business. For the next 35 years, Fred taught hundreds of students not only about the accordion but also about the joy of music. To his students, he was more than a master accordionist and teacher, he was like a father. His pride and joy was the Des Moines Accordion Symphony Orchestra that he founded in 1961 and directed for the next 20 years. In 1972, the orchestra toured Europe and during its existence won numerous awards and also performed in over 10 major U.S. cities. His other pride and joy was the “Boresi White Fence Farm” where he and Marchelle lived for over 55 years. They lovingly tended the property and kept it in immaculate condition painting the boundary fences yearly and mowing the grounds constantly. Fred and Marchelle were given the keys to the city of Des Moines by mayoral proclamation in 2001 and saw their former business inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame.
Fred’s devotion to Marchelle during their 58 year marriage was a role model to all who knew them. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family but is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Fred was preceded in death by his wife Marchelle, his parents, and siblings.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8 pm on Friday, June 28, at the Iles Funeral Homes, Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid, Iowa, where a Rosary service will begin at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Services.
