Richard “Dick” Harold Thornton, age 86, of Glidden passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 17, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev.Lorinda H.M. Hoover officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. followed by a Masonic Memorial Service. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Doris Bentley and vocalists will be Mark and Marlys Conner. Casket bearers will be Charlie Freml, John Johnston, Bruce Nelson, Gary Messerich, Myron Heithoff, and Mark Conner. Honorary casket bearers will be Bob Gregory, Brian Johnson, Cal Hughes, and Bill Gregory. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden with military honors to be conducted by the Glidden American Legion. The family suggests memorials be made to Glidden Community Auction, the Glidden United Methodist Church or as the donor wishes and may be left at the funeral home or the church.
Born on April 4, 1927 at Jefferson, Iowa, he was the son of John W. and Alice M. (Frantz) Thornton. He grew up in Greene County and graduated from Scranton High School in 1945. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army in June of 1945. He served on a troop ship bringing soldiers home from Japan at the end of WWII. He was married to Grace Arlene Sylvester on December 28, 1947 at the Glidden Methodist Church by Rev. H.W. Hewitt. The couple made their home in Glidden where Dick worked for the Glidden REC for 41 years first at the power plant then as a lineman and later as director of member services. He retired in 1989. Dick and Grace spent 20 years at Rio Valley Estates in Weslaco, Texas. He was a member of the Glidden United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of Haggai Masonic Lodge of Glidden of which he had served as Past Master and was appointed a Grand Lodge Officer in 1994. He was a 50 year member and Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Signet Chapter #1 of Carroll. Dick served as a volunteer fireman for 34 years, served on the Glidden City Council, and was a Cub Master and Scout Master of the Glidden Scouts. He was a member of the Merle Hay Post of the Glidden American Legion and a charter of the Scranton V.F.W. Dick enjoyed playing fishing, camping, traveling, sports, and spending time with his family and many good friends.
Dick is survived by his wife Grace of Glidden; a son Stephen Thornton and his wife Nancy of Dodge Center, Minnesota; a grandson Bradley Thornton of Apple Valley, Minnesota; a great grandson Jacob Thornton; a brother John Sylvester Jr. and his wife Mary of Fernley, Nevada; and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Natalie Webb, a brother John Jr., and two sisters: Bernice Burke and Larada Reck.Information provided by: Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home
