Q: Is chiropractic care during pregnancy safe?

Posted June 12, 2013 in Advice Column, Greene County

A: Chiropractic care is safe and very effective throughout pregnancy. Working with women who are pregnant or trying to conceive is routine for most chiropractors. Chiropractors who work with pregnant women use tables that adjust for a pregnant woman’s body and use techniques that avoid pressure on the abdomen.

• Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy? During pregnancy, there are several changes that occur to a woman’s body. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine: protruding abdomen and increased back curve, pelvic changes and postural adaptations.

When the pelvis is misaligned it reduces the amount of room for the developing baby, called intrauterine constraint. This condition may make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a non-invasive birth. Malpresentation can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as C-sections

• What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy? Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide benefits for women who are pregnant including controlling symptoms of nausea, reducing the time of labor and delivery. relieving back, neck or joint pain and preventing a potential cesarean delivery

• What about chiropractic care and breech deliveries? Many chiropractors use a specific chiropractic treatment which allows for balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for correction of a breech presentation.
