Taste of summer

Posted June 05, 2013 in Community Featured, Clear Lake

Some folks say that Iowa has two seasons: winter and road construction.

In reality, here in Clear Lake it’s more fun to think of it terms of winter and South Shore Sweet Spot season.

After a long winter’s wait, the iconic ice cream cone at the far end of South Shore Drive is open again. Even if the food and ice cream wasn’t great, visiting a little shop shaped like an ice cream cone would be just plain fun. Fortunately, the ice cream is delectable, and the food offerings are always a delight.

Along with all the old favorites look for a few new taste surprises at the Sweet Spot this year. Frozen yogurt is a healthy, lower calorie alternative that’s every bit as sweet and wonderful as ice cream going down. With flavors of Honey Vanilla and Triple Chocolate, the frozen yogurt is just too tempting to resist.

For those who must stick with the ice cream, the Sweet Spot has a few new toppings to try, including Cookie Dough and Andes Mint flavorings. Personally, anything with cookie dough is something I always want to go back to again and again.

Now, for something both fun and yummy, you can’t go wrong with the Cow Pie. A huge pile of ice cream is hollowed out, served with caramel and pecans, dipped in chocolate and served on a plate. What is not to love about ice cream, caramel, chocolate and pecans, cow pie or no cow pie?

Of course, it’s not just about the ice cream at the Sweet Spot. There are specialty pizzas ranging from vegetarian, to meat lovers, and from barbecued chicken to margarita pizza.

You can also build your own pizza from an impressive array of toppings. Start by choosing your own sauce and cheese, and then top with it almost anything you can imagine, from pepperoni to Italian sausage and a whole lot in between.

And, if you can’t tell by now, you need to plan a little time just to read the menu because the choices are so amazing.

It just goes to show that, although you may have to go out of your way a bit to find this little place, a long, lingering visit to the Sweet Spot is always worth your while.
