On a recent visit to Moulton’s new restaurant, The Jar, I have to admit I didn’t have high expectations.
I was expecting a greasy spoon that would be a good place to meet someone for breakfast or lunch. The menu advertised an undistinguished list of offerings: pizza burger, cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, tenderloin. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger for $4.50 and fries for $2.
Then the food came, and I was in for a surprise. This was not a defrosted hamburger patty with some cheese melted on top of a few mushrooms. This was a gourmet burger with a rich mushroom sauce spilling all over the plate. The sauce was so delectable I had to set aside the sandwich and eat the mushrooms with a fork to make sure I didn’t miss any.
The owner, Donna Trondson, was also waiting on us, so I asked her a few questions. She says she prepares almost all the food served at the restaurant from scratch, with a few exceptions like the french fries. On any given day, she might be whipping up some new recipe, like the ham chowder she made recently that sold out right away.
The Jar opened on Valentine’s Day this year and sold out its special that night. That is the same special offered each Thursday night, the only evening the restaurant is open: a one-pound slab of prime rib with a choice of sides, bread, pie and a drink for $16.
Another noteworthy special is on Tuesdays: Texas tacos, which consist of raised bread rolled out and stuffed with meat, then pinched shut and deep-fried. After the tacos are cut open, customers can put on their own taco fixings. The Monday special is a half-pound hand-breaded tenderloin with a drink and fries for $7.75.
Trondson says she’s had a great response from people in Moulton.
“The town has been really awesome and said, ‘It’s a new business, let’s help her out,’ ” she says.
But helping out a new business isn’t the reason to head to The Jar — the real reason is to try the hearty, home-cooked fare.The Jar
