Diane Alex died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 19 months after being diagnosed. She was 59. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

She was born in Emporia, Kansas on May 8, 1954. Her parents were cattle farmers. She began teaching piano while still on the farm at the age of 16. Diane graduated magna cum laude from Drake University in piano performance in 1977. Diane was a piano teacher and judge of piano competitions. She had hundreds of students during a 42-year career. She was a member and former president of the Des Moines Music Teachers Association. She lived in London, England for a short time. Diane was an avid reader, loved the movies, Caribbean cruises, the symphony, her health club and chardonnay.

Diane will be missed by her husband, Tom; daughters, Stacey and Kim (Carlos) Alex; granddaughter, Liliana Diane Vergara; brothers, James H. Hind (Carol) and Steven Hind (Annabeth); nieces, Emily Hind (John) and Allison Carroll (Mike); and nephews, Brian Hind (Amy), Michael Hind (Melinda), Jordan Hind (Leslie), and Brendan Alex (Sonya). Her mother and father, Margaret and William Hind, preceded her in death in 2006 and 2005 respectively.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Mercy Cancer Center, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Unity Point Health Clinic/Hospice Care and her many friends and neighbors for their help, love and support.
